Object description :

"Empire Trim "venus And Love""
Important early 19th century trim from the Empire-Restoration period around 1820 in finely chiseled gilt bronze presenting a beautiful allegorical clock featuring Venus and her son Cupid, the goddess is holding a pair of scissors while preparing to cut Cupid's wing to retain love, while the lower part is animated by a bas-relief with blacksmith cherubs, in many cultures the blacksmith illustrates the one who brings cultural knowledge to humans, it is the one who has a creative power that transforms the material, giving it a dimension close to magic or divine knowledge, all mythologies venerate one or more blacksmiths who agree to create marvelous or magical objects and weapons, such as the ornaments of the gods, the arrows of Apollo and Eros, the cuirass of Heracles, the belt of Aphrodite, the throne and the aegis of Zeus and Hera. The set is completed by a refined pair of candelabras depicting winged Cupids "Eros and Anteros" which according to several mythological stories claim that Venus offered a brother to Eros who was bored and had stopped growing. His name is Anteros, literally "returned Love" which symbolizes reciprocal love, which strengthens and grows when it in turn receives it. They stand on a sphere, each brandishing a flowery garland from which three arms of light with foliage scroll patterns and a central torch escape, the square section bases present a large acanthus rosette surmounted by a squared cylindrical barrel with a heart-shaped top. Good general condition and gilding. Pendulum movement with revision (lack of key and pendulum). Dimensions of the Pendulum: 41 cm high X 30 cm long X 15 cm deep / Candelabra: 53 cm high X 20 cm wide X 14 cm deep.
