Abraham van Cuylenborch specialised in his native Utrecht in these Italianate, Arcadian cavern interiors. Callisto was one of the virgin nymphs who befriended Diana, goddess of the hunt. She was raped by Jupiter. When Diana discovered that Callisto was pregnant she banned her.
