*Charles Artus was born in Étretat on July 16, 1897.
Pupil of Édouard Navellier, then assistant to François Pompon in the 1920s, member of the Salon d'Automne where he exhibited a lithographic stone entitled Écureuil and a bronze Guinea fowl.
Lifelong member of the Society of French Artists where he exhibited from 1920 to 1927.
In 1923 he obtained an honorable mention and then, in 1926, a bronze medal. He exhibited until 1940 at the Salon des Indépendants, the National Society of Fine Arts and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. He is a member of the "Group of XII" group of animal sculptors gathered around the figure of Pompom with Pierre-Jean Jouve, Hilbert, Jane Poupelet, Lemar, Guyot, Bigot. Artus' studio at 212 rue de Vaugirard became famous, and Artus worked with the Edgar Brandt, Charpentier and Bernheim Jeune galleries.
