Object description :

"Saber Of Chasseurs à Cheval De La Garde Consulaire"
Saber of Chasseurs à Cheval de la Garde of the first model, characterized by the reinforcing splints riveted to the clevis and the rivet.
Handle of blackened sheepskin filigree with a twisted brass wire.
Strongly rounded "Hungarian style" guard branch, joining the cruise at a right angle and forming a quillon ending in a hexagonal knob. Very arched cap with long tail. This frame bears only the Verification V of the Versailles factory.
Curved blade with a hollow side, flat back and counter-edged. It is stamped with the LVV in an oval of Benjamin Levavasseur Inspector in Klingenthal from 03/1798 to 09/1803 and the M of Jean-Jacques Mouton, 1st controller from 07/1798 to 02/1809. The back is engraved Mfture Nale from the Klingenthal Coulaux Frères Entreprs. On the counter-guard side it is marked G79.
The wooden scabbard is sheathed in blackened leather and has two brass fittings linked together by splints, which are riveted to it. Each trim wears a domed bail bracelet edged with a rush. The bail rings are made of iron, as well as the asymmetrical dart. Cope and rivet are hallmarked with the JC of Jean-Nicolas Cazamajou.
This saber is in its own juice. It is the rare primitive model, which the Consular Guard received on September 22, 1803. This saber made all the campaigns of the Consulate and the Empire, from Austria to Russia, passing by Spain. It is therefore rare to find one that has come down to us.
This one comes from the famous Aries collection. It bears the wax seal and the label. The same one, kept in the Invalisdes Museum was documented in the 4th issue of 1967 of the Aries notebooks, illustrations 7 to 12.
