22 etchings by William WALCOT, printed in the art printing workshops "La Roseraie", (title thumbnail, 6 inserts including the frontispiece and 15 very large banners). Printed in 237 copies, 1 of the 15 leading copies on ancient Japan containing a suite of all the etchings, 3 plates refused in 2 states (p. 59 and 2 on p. 141), 1 view of Carthage on double page reserved for 15 head copies only (described in the table of plates but not announced in the supporting document) and 1 unpublished original watercolor representing a naked woman and a snake, signed lower right. One of the most beautiful illustrations of Salammbô!
William Frantsevich Walcot (born Вильям Францевич Валькот, 1874-1943) was a British architect, decorator and etcher. Originally from Odessa, he made a career in Russia, successfully following the tradition of Russian Art Nouveau. As an architect, his best-known works are the Metropolis Hotel and the Art Nouveau style Yakunchikova House in Moscow. During the years 1920-1930, he produced many engravings. The Royal Institute of British Architects retains his painted compositions.
