Jean Joseph WEERTS 1847-1927, portrait of Henry Marcel in his study, oil on wood signed and dated 1912 lower left, molded wooden frame (67.5x57cm) Henry Marcel on leaving his law studies, he is admitted by competition to the auditorship of the Council of State in 1878. In May 1880, he was appointed Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Interior of the Freycinet government. He held various senior civil service positions in other ministries and at the Council of State1. In February 1899, he married Laure Meyer (first daughter of the banker Maurice Meyer) and from whom he had a son, the philosopher and playwright Gabriel Marcel. After Laure's premature death, he married Berthe Meyer, her sister. In October 1903, he replaced Henry Roujon as Director of Fine Arts. In 1905, he was appointed general administrator of the National Library2, after the departure of Léopold Delisle. In May 1913, he took over as head of the National Museums until 1919.
