Object description :

"Nineteenth Carved Wood Distaff."
Beautiful finely carved wooden distaff from the 19th century. The distaff is used to hold and store wool, linen and hemp fibers that are not yet spun so that they do not get tangled and that it is easy to use them. The simplest form is a branch of wood on which the fibers are rolled up and held in place with a ribbon. In other cases the wood or the wicker will be split into four to form a cage which will contain the material. As always in everyday objects, some can be abundantly decorated, especially when the object is offered by the fiancé to his bride. The distaff can be used both with a spinning wheel, it is then placed very close to the spool, and with a spindle, in this case it is held under an arm slipped under the belt and the spindle is maintained other hand. Good condition. Length 87cm.
