"Wisdom", terracotta sculpture depicting three little girls seated on a low wall. Signed "Ary Bitter", foundry stamp "Susse Frères Editeur Paris" Dimensions: length 43 cm, height 27 cm, depth 16 cm.
Ary Jean Léon Bitter said Ary Bitter (1883-1973) is a French painter, designer and sculptor . He entered the School of Fine Arts in Marseille in 1895 and studied sculpture under the direction of Emile Aldebert. In 1900, he obtained the First Prize, in the "torso" section. In 1902, Bitter won the competition which sent him to study in Paris, at the School of Fine Arts, where he entered the studio of master Ernest Louis Barrias. At the same time, he frequented Jules Coutan's studio. He exhibited in 1910 at the Salon des Artistes Français and received an honorable mention with his Enfant au chevreau, then a silver medal at the Salon of 1921 for Fillette et cabris. In 1923, he created the mascot for Mrs. Louis Renault's personal car. In 1924, Bitter finally received the gold medal at the Salon. In 1925, Ary Bitter exhibited alongside Paul Sylvestre, Maximilien Fiot, Roger Godchaux and Georges Guyot at the Galerie Susse on Boulevard de la Madeleine. The same year, he exhibited at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, then he had twenty-nine of his works published by Susse during the interwar period and sixteen others by Les Neveux de J. Lehmann. The consecration came to him when he received the Legion of Honor in 1932. In 1937, Bitter participated in the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Paris, where he exhibited glassware, stoneware, with Bouraine at the Palais de Ceramics, and Héraklès, a bronze, at the Palais du Métal, in the company of Guyot, Guino and Fiot.
