"Calm Morning On A Small Breton Port. Eugene Tanguy. (1830-1899)."
Very nice atmosphere in this painting of the XIXth century. the small port of Brittany wakes up with the soft morning light. The boats stranded on the sand wait for the tide to come back to life. It is an oil on canvas in good condition (some small well-done old restorations which are not to be resumed. No cleaning to be expected). The frame is old but repainted and cut in the middle horizontally with some gaps. This superb canvas is by the painter Eugène Tanguy, born in Vannes in 1830 and died in 1899. A pupil in Gleyre's studio, he turned away from his too classical teaching and asked for lessons from nature alone. Cantor of his native Brittany, he also took pleasure in reproducing the sites of Seine-et-Oise, in particular that of Livry-la-Forêt which he evoked in several works. He exhibited at the salon since 1864. Referenced in Bénézit (dictionary of painters) and in a book devoted to French landscape painters of the 19th Century. It is present in several museums in Nantes, Troyes and Vannes. dimensions of the canvas alone, 38 cm x 55 cm. That is a 10 Landscape. With the frame, 75.5 cm x 59 cm.
