This dynamic composition, with lively polychromy, shows the winemaker as a gentleman dressed in 18th century fashion and wearing a tricorn hat. The gold highlights that embellish her outfit testify to her elegance and refinement. Frozen in full motion, a pair of taps in his right hand, he is about to open his barrel with the other hand. His playful attitude reminds us of the hedonistic theme linked to the pleasures of the party that punctuated the life of aristocrats in the curial milieu in Europe at this period. We find in this respect, through various details, the rural and bucolic atmosphere of nature, represented by the mound making the junction with the circular pedestal, and the tree trunk around which the whole composition seems to gravitate. Thus, the subject encourages fraternity, exhilaration, exaltation and transport of souls.
Our model, created around 1778 by the French sculptor-modeller Michel-Victor Acier (1736-1799), dates from the middle of the 19th century.
