Unpublished preface by Jean COCTEAU of the French Academy. “Raymond Radiguet, monster of genius, certainly had, like Rimbaud, the devil in his body, but this devil seems very suspicious. More than an infernal zone, it comes from the “Green paradise of childish love” and from this “part of God” that Gide grants us. This “part of God” was his own and whereas with others it comes from beyond, with him it was the base, the plinth, the sap of the tree, the core of the fruit. With “Le Diable au Corps”, a plant is told in our language and the slightest line of his book will always retain the peach fluff of a cheek on fire.”
