"Buddha Myanmar Mandalay"
This Burmese image of the historic Buddha Shakyamuni, makes a gesture known as bhumisparsha-mudra, or "calling the earth to witness." Made in bronze, using lost wax, the work dates from the 19th century, Mandalay period (1853-1948). The craftsman paid particular attention to the expression of serenity and compassion, in particular by using glass or enamels to create his eyes. Vestiges of gilding, later, on the ushnisha.
