"View Of Paris - Quai De l'Hotel De Ville, Signed Galien Laloue"
The quays of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and the statue of Etienne Marcel under the Snow Gouache and watercolor signed E. Galien Laloue, circa 1910-1920 Certificate of authenticity by Monsieur Noé Willer. (Will be reproduced in volume 2 of the catalog raisonné of the work of Galien Laloue currently in preparation) Etienne Marcel is the provost of the merchants, therefore the one who controls the city of Paris from 1355. It is he who buys the "house with pillars" to install the municipal power there in 1357. But from 1358 he opposed the Dauphin and raised the population of the Ile de la Cité against the future Charles V. These alliances with Charles the Bad and the English were fatal to him and he was beheaded at the Porte Saint-Antoine on July 31, 1358. Galen-Laloue Eugène (1854-1941) His father Charles was a theater designer. Eugène was the eldest of eight children and took an interest in painting at a very young age. With the exception of the time he spent in the army, he never traveled without his brushes. For him, to live was to paint, and he painted all his life until his arm fractured during his evacuation to Bordeaux. He will be a prolific painter, both by taste and also to meet his financial needs. His paintings have left us with a very faithful image of Paris at different times. His talent will be recognized by his contemporaries, Galen quickly becomes famous and his paintings sell well, not only to a French public but also English and American. Galen-Laloue was obsessed with his painting, and, in his personal life, sought only one thing, simplicity. He survived three wives, three sisters whom he married successively. He never sought honors and glory. He sold his paintings for a living, always got paid in advance and was "under contract" with several dealers to ensure regular income. He sold all his paintings at the same price, not very high considering his celebrity. He signed his works with many pseudonyms (for contractual reasons) "J.Liévin", "E.Galliany", "L.Dupuy", "Gallien", "Galien", "Galien-Laloue"…
