Guillaume Edouard Marie Dubufe was born in Paris on May 16, 1853. He is the son of the painter Édouard Louis Dubufe and Juliette née Zimmermann. His paternal grandfather, Claude Marie Dubufe (1790-1864), was also a painter. His maternal uncle is the composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893). The latter married in 1852, Maria Zimmermann, the sister of his mother, whose father is a renowned pianist. First student of his father and his mother who taught him sculpture, he continued his training with Alexis Joseph Mazerolle (1826-1889). On April 27, 1878, in Paris (17th), he married Cécile Woog. They will have five children, including Juliette Dubufe-Wehrlé, who will become a painter in her turn. He bought a mansion at 43 Avenue de Villiers in Paris (17th) from a painter who had had it built in 1878. His niece Mrs. Jules Henner acquired this residence at his request and transformed it into a museum in 1921, before donating it to the State in 1926. In 1885, he decorated the ceiling of the foyer of the Comédie Française. The family spends long periods in their large villa in Anacapri, on the island of Capri (Italy). There, Guillaume Dubufé made paintings representing his house and which he exhibited in 1906 at the Galerie Georges Petit. It seems that he worked there from 1888 to 1890 on a series of large paintings on the Virgin Mary. In 1891, he decorated the ceilings of the Lobau gallery, at the Paris City Hall, and of the village hall of the Élysée Palace in 1894, of the Sorbonne Library in 1896. That same year he designs and produces the decor for the Salon National des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is, moreover, a friend of Auguste Rodin with whom he exchanges a long correspondence. In 1900, Dervillé, director of the Société des Chemins de Fer Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM), placed an order with him and several other painters for a painting for the decoration of the Great Hall of the restaurant at the Gare de Lyons to Paris; "Le Train Bleu" under the control of the architect Marius Toudoire in charge of supervising the decoration. The subject is the representation of the city of Lyon. His colleague and friend Émile Friant (1863-1932) made his portrait in 1905 which he dedicated to him (Musée d'Orsay). From 1906 to 1909, he decorated the town hall of Saint-Mandé (Val-de-Marne) with Édouard Rosset-Granger and exhibited that year with his daughter Juliette Dubufe-Wehrlé at the Salon from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a watercolor L'Amour et Psyché while presenting three miniature and pastel works. Guillaume Dubufe disappeared at sea off Buenos-Aires (Argentina), on May 24, 1909. He rests with his wife, Cécile Dubufe, née Woog (1858-1925) and his daughter, the painter Juliette Dubufe Werhlé (1879-1918) .
