It was developed in the 14th century CE during the reign of the Bahmani Sultans. The term "bidriware" comes from the commune of Bidar, which is still the main center of production. The metal used is blackened white brass inlaid with silver. Bidriware undergoes an eight-step process: casting, smoothing with a file, drawing with a chisel, engraving with a chisel and a hammer, inlaying with pure silver, smoothing again, polishing and finally oxidation with earth and ammonium chloride.
