"Charles Jean Agard (1866 - 1950) Charcoal Drawing "the Traveling Sawmill" Isle Adam"
Very beautiful charcoal drawing and white chalk highlights on bluish paper by Charles Agard titled on a label affixed to the back "The traveling sawmill". It represents a man dressed in an apron handling a plank of wood near a sawmill. Probably in Seine-et-Oise perhaps in the village of Nesles-la-Vallée where lived the artist who represented the village and its surroundings a lot. On the back, an old exhibition label at Isle Adam tells us the name of the artist, his address and the title of the work. Painter, draftsman and engraver, the works of Charles Agard are still exhibited today at Isle Adam, within the framework of the Louis-Senlecq art and history museum, which designates him as painter of the School of the edges of the Oise. He began to exhibit in 1893, at the Salon des Indépendants, of which he was a member of the committee, then at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts as well as at the Salon d'Automne.
