Object description :

"Strong French Cavalry Sword Model 1679 Called "walloon""
This weapon, from the "Wallones" family, is the very first truly regulatory cavalry strongsword in the French army. It is quite rare to find these swords in good condition, complete, with the guard plates present and the hilt wire binding in good condition, as is the case with this one.
This type of sword appeared just after the wars of Holland (1672-1678) during which the French officers had been able to measure how much their fragile cavalry swords, although elegant, were far from being as solid as the robust Germanic Walloons of their opponents.
The decision was therefore made to equip the officers with weapons similar to those of their adversaries.
BLADE: So it's a solid Walloon blade made in Solingen. It has a lenticular section, with a central fuller on the first 20 cm of the blade.
In this groove we find partly erased, the inscription "-:- SACHGOM -:- " which is a variant of the usual inscription "SAHAGOM". This variant is sometimes encountered. For some authors it would have made it possible to circumvent taxes, others simply see it as the consequence of a mediocre level of spelling...
On each side we find the Wolf of Passau, very clear.
Near the guard on each side there is a swordsmith's punch. On the inner side, "xxx" which is surmounted by a crowned head which could quite well correspond to the mark of Peter Wundes the Younger, active between 1630 and 1685. On the outer side, only the crowned head is visible
Length of the blade = 81.5 cm, Width near the guard = 4 cm, thickness near the guard = 0.7 cm
GUARD: It is a Walloon guard, with two asymmetrical pierced shells, and thumb ring. The two trays seem completely original, they are pierced with circular holes of 2 different sizes, at regular intervals. We find on the quillon the punchmark in the shape of a 4-leaf clover typical of these weapons. The guard branch is fixed to the pommel by means of a screw.
POMMEL: It is massive, in the shape of a bulb.
GRIP : It is covered with a beautiful steel wire binding work, with quadruple fine twisted binding, and large section embossed binding.
The braided  ferrules, known as "turk's heads" are present and original, in perfect condition.

This sword is therefore a beautiful historical testimony of the time of the Sun King wars.
It is historically the first truly regulatory model of a cavalry officer's sword. Being complete and in good condition is particularly rare.
