The object in question represents a very particular trunk of the eighteenth century, of rectangular shape in wood, with inlay in mother of pearl to form a geometric decoration.
As it is obtained from the inner layer of the shell of some molluscs, the mother of pearl is a material of great value and preciousness, frequently used especially in the inlaid decoration of furniture, as well as in the creation of jewelry, buttons and mosaics, not only for its iridescent pearly white color, but also for the extreme hardness and flexural strength of this material. 
Particularly refined in this case is the chromatic play of contrasts between the dark wood and the light inlays with infinite shades. 
Trunks have been in use since ancient times: in the past, they were typically used to store clothes, furnishings, books, linen and accessories. With reinforced locks, as in this case, they were also intended to contain and preserve jewels and objects of particular value. The trunks used by the nobility were often embellished with openwork inlays and engravings on the wood, or the outer covering was decorated with circles and chisels, always made with precious materials.
