A student of Léon Bonnat, René Chrétien made his debut at the Salon at a very young age and obtained an honorable mention there in 1889. He mainly produced still lifes, a few genre scenes and intimate scenes of Norman peasants at work. The subject of the return from fishing has sometimes been treated in his work but remains quite rare. In our painting he places his subject, the shrimp fisherwoman, in the center of the composition, on a light background. She is represented, barefoot, resting on her imposing landing net. The works of René Chrétien are present at the Musée de Picardie in Amiens, La Rochelle, Mulhouse and Niort.
