The attribution of this portrait has been the subject of various interpretations since its acquisition. Despite its formal resemblance to works by artists of the Lombard school, especially Campi (pointed out by Roberto Ciabattini), it also has much in common with paintings of the Venetian school.   Massimo Seroni (Firenze, Restauratore di Beni Culturali), who carried out the restoration of the painting, rightly pointed out the peculiarity of painting technique - very precise, revealing the hand of the artist who worked a lot in the graphic arts.  It is reminiscent of Moroni's technique, but refers to an artist of a much younger generation. 
In summary, the author of this work may be sought among the painters of the Bergamo-Brescia area, or among the northern European masters who worked at this time in Venice.
