"“the Incas” Wallpaper Circa 1820 After Joseph Dufour."
-Suite of 3 strips of wallpaper belonging to the panoramic “Les Incas” by Louis-Joseph Dufour.

- Period: Vers 1820 reissued and manufactured by the Desfossé and Karth factory.

-The complete set of this panoramic entitled "The Incas" includes 25 strips printed in color. The original model was created by the Manufacture DUFOUR in Paris around 1818 and presented the following year at the Exposition des produits de l'industrie française”.

-The patterns were printed in color on a wooden block, with the exception of the backgrounds which were brushed by hand, this technique making it possible to obtain the subtle gradation of the skies.

-The proposed panels (lengths 20 to 23) are entitled “the landing of Pizarro and his companions”. -Printing with 2112 wooden boards including 939 for the figures and in 33 colors including 42 for the figures, for the whole decor.

-Francisco Pizzare (1475-1541) Spanish conquistador succeeded in conquering the Inca empire in 1532.

-Concerning this panoramic “The Incas” within museum collections:

-The almost complete panoramic is present in the collections of MAD inv. 29271 our three lengths are also kept there.

-Some strips are also kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

- State of preservation: The three strips are mounted on a canvas, nail marks on the edges suggest that this set was embedded in a woodwork.

- Gaps are to be noted in the polychromy, mainly at the level of the group of characters. the whole remains in a good state of conservation with a beautiful freshness of the colors.
