Today I offer you an ancient Kurdish gallery-carpet Herki from the regions of eastern Anatolia and northern Iraq.
This beautiful piece measures 100 cm wide by 303 cm long.
The composition of these pieces is adorned with rare and magnificent colours.
The technique adopts "the slit technique" found on Senneh kilims, and on Obruk-kilims, also a source of confusion to classify this genre.
The warp is wool. The weft-pattern is also in wool.
Carpet from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Iraqi Kurds are mainly concentrated in the mountainous regions of Anatolia and northern and northeastern Iraq.
A people originating from Central Asia, the Kurds are Sunni Muslims who maintain their Kurdish national identity and resist change, regardless of the country in which they reside. Kurdish kilims are characterized by a weaving technique that often leaves long wefts floating on the underside of the kilim and often braided ends with long fringes. The main tribes that weave kilims in these regions are the Herki, Dizai, Yazidi and Surchi. Among them, the Herkis were and are the most skilled and prolific weavers. They make flat weaves using the weft winding technique. The kilims are generally woven in two parts and assembled for the wide models of 160cm and more. The old 18th and 19th century designs are very variable and the colors include dark reds, browns and blues, with a little white. (See another Herki we feature on Proantic) More modern late 19th and early 20th century kilims feature pink, orange, white and brown like our model. ### Work of other tribes:
# The Dizai are now largely settled. They weave a few bags and accessories, and their split kilims are not much different from Malatya banded kilims. # The Yazidis of North Mosul make both split weave kilims and extra weave kilims, the designs of which are usually arranged in horizontal stripes.
The split-weave variety resembles those made near Van in the Hakkari region of Turkey.
# Surchi kilims are similar to Herki kilims except for the patterns which tend to be a bit larger. Iraqi Kurdish kilims do not appear in the markets very often, with the exception of a few pieces of Herki, and there is no doubt that with the upheavals following the Gulf War, other wars and the many movements of populations, kilims will be hard to come by in the future. Dimensions: width: 100 cm (39") x length: 303 cm (119") This rug can be used as a decorative element on the floor, but given its great beauty, it can also be placed as a decoration on a wall. ## Do not hesitate to contact us For any information or other photos, please call me on 06 13 36 09 30 or winsteinprovence@gmail.com.
