"Large Sukuma Mask Tanzania"
I offer you this large Sukuma mask from Tanzania. It was collected in Burundi in the 1970s. It is in northern Tanzania in a region south of Lake Victoria that the Sukuma people live. Their masks have a very raw, very expressive aspect. These masks belonged to secret societies which were banned after 1905. Some holes seem to have been filled with resin, the teeth are made of bamboo, the eyes underlined in white, the interior is attacked by xylophages, height 37 cm.
