James Frederick Buchli, now 77, was a naval officer, engineer, test pilot, colonel in the USMC (U.S. Marine Corp) and NASA astronaut.
Born on 20 June 1945 in New Rockford, North Dakota, he became a NASA engineer in 1978 and joined the Thirty-Five New Guys (TFNG), also known as NASA Astronaut Group 8. It is the eighth astronaut group of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
It has four missions in space.
The first, STS-51-C, was launched on 24 January 1985 in the space shuttle Discovery OV-103 and involved five men. It was NASA's 15th flight and the Shuttle's 3rd.
The second took place the same year on 30 October: STS-61-A, the Spacelab scientific mission, NASA's 22nd mission, with eight men on board the shuttle Challenger.
The third TS-29, on 13 March 1989, had five men in the same shuttle as the previous one and was NASA's 28th space shuttle mission.
Finally, his fourth and last mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-48) took place on 12 September 1991 and also included five astronauts.
He thus accumulated a total of twenty days and ten hours in orbit.

The first medal is the NASA Space Flight Medal, awarded to the participant in an American space mission.
The second medal is the NASA Exceptional Bravery Medal, awarded for an act of bravery.
