In accordance with traditional iconography, the poet wears a laurel wreath.
This subject is attributed to the French sculptor Émile-Victor Blavier (1821-?).
Born in Crespin (North of France), the sculptor first studied at the academic schools of Douai, then came to Paris where he was a pupil of the painter Mœunch, known as Munich, and the sculptors Toussaint and Calmels. He began at the Salon of 1852 and exhibited for the last time in 1876.
The Chartreuse Museum in Douai retains a large number of his works.
