Coming from a family of goldsmith craftsmen, he studied engraving from his adolescence and later studied at the Royal School of Fine Arts, then painting at the Barbizon school. Having the animal as his favorite subject even if he sometimes chooses mythological subjects, he opened his own foundry at the end of the 1830s. Louis-Philippe, and exhibited at the Louvre and was a great success at the Universal Exhibition of 1855 thanks to his very naturalized vein sculpture Jaguar devouring a hare. Coming from a family background very favorable to the practice of engraving and sculpture, Antoine-Louis Barye began his apprenticeship as a teenager in the workshop of the metal engraver, Fourier, then became in 1916 the pupil of the sculptor Bosio and the painter Antoine-Jean Gros the following year. Classically trained, Antoine-Louis Barye then preferred to devote himself to animal subjects, he used to go and observe at the Natural History Museum and the Jardin des Plantes.
