"Saint Lucia Sculpture Polychrome Wood France XVIth Century"
Statue of Saint Lucia of Syracuse in polychrome wood on a base. The saint holds in her right hand the palm of martyrdom and in her left hand a book on which appear her usual attributes: her gouged out eyes. Indeed, during the persecutions under the reign of Docletian, she suffered many tortures and in particular the removal of her eyes. Another tradition says that she withdrew them herself to send them to the fiancé that was imposed on her, against her vows of chastity. The elegance of the draperies can link this very fine work to Renaissance productions in Champagne. Strongly stripped polychromy. Restorations on the drapery. Missing top of the palm. See photos Height: 60.5 cm with base.
