"Rare Sculpture Of Saint Bartholomew 14th Century. Spain "
Rare sculpture of Saint Bartholomew from the 14th century. Spain (Leon or Castile). The Roman Breviary (based on ancient traditions), relates that during a mission of this apostle of Christ at the ends of the world (India) the paiens heard their idol Bereth complains "Our god is bound in chains of fire, he dares neither to breathe nor speak, from the moment when God’s apostle Bartholomew entered"
The sculptor depicted the defeated demon at his feet chained to the holy book he holds in his hand, in a visually clear symbolism.
The hieratic appearance of the saint contrasts with the rather mutinous face of the devil (which makes him quite human in the end...)
Very touching representation of the victory of Good over Evil.
Right arm (no doubt who performed the blessing sign) and the devil’s feet are missing
79cm high
