The artists and craftsmen of the Louis XVI style were able to draw inspiration from Greco-Roman art and nature with dexterity and harmony of proportion, making the Louis XVI style known and appreciated beyond its borders.
The Louis XVI style is characterised by its straight lines and symmetrical decorations. The frames of the mirror mouldings are always made of oak, beech, amaranth or walnut, and European limewood for the sculpture.
The ornamentation is inspired by Antiquity, nature and exoticism, with garlands of flowers, ribbon bows, palmettes, pearls, oves, medallions, cassolettes, foliage, acanthus leaves, olive and laurel leaves, wicker baskets, sickles, beehives, pastorals, shepherds, country scenes, chinoiseries, etc.
The carved wood is gilded with gold or painted in pastel tones with gold highlights.
The Louis XVI mirror became a key decorative object of its time.
