"Lille 1775, Very Large Coffee Pot, Pierre Joseph Pontus, Sterling Silver"
Sumptuous tripod coffee pot with side handle from the Louis XVI period in sterling silver. It bears the maker's mark of Pierre Joseph Pontus (1724-1801) who became a master goldsmith at the age of 22 and practiced his craft for more than 50 years, which is exceptionally long for a goldsmith in the eighteenth century. In several places, the coffee pot is also stamped with the hallmarks of the generality of Lille for the year 1775. On the belly of the pot are engraved unidentified alliance coats of arms who probably date from à later than period than the Louis XVI period. The coffee pot is large and impressive, which explains its exceptional weight of 1335 grams.
