Napoleon 3 Bamboo Style Bookcase

Bookcase cabinet made of blond cherry wood, uprights and decorations in carved wood imitating bamboo, very good quality French workmanship. The faux bamboo style developed in France in the last third of the 19th century, inspired by the fashion for Japonism, but also in America and England.

This piece of furniture is flanked by two corner columns made with a wood lathe, they are topped with a capital also in turned wood, and the base rests on the ground by spinning top feet. The pediment, triangular in shape, is also dressed in moldings in the bamboo style, the design is remarkable with at the top an interlacing of wooden sticks in fake bamboo. The piece of furniture opens with a door, beautiful double bolt lock with brass chest, and a large drawer in the lower part that also locks. The shelves, 4 in number, placed on cleats, are adjustable in height by a set of wooden racks. The cabinetmaker has pushed the level of finish very far, with the edges of the shelves clad in contrasting wood. The bottom is paneled, the drawer is assembled with dovetails, the furniture is easily disassembled. Very good quality of wood used, blond cherry, well preserved with a beautiful light patina. Furniture with similar lines was made at the same time in England, but often in lighter wood, particularly in pine, and also in America in maple, which proves the international development of this bamboo style over this period.
