Gaston HOFFMANN 1883-1977

is one of the most surprising painters of his generation.
From symbolism to classical portraiture, as good a colorist as a technician, he is also a poster artist, caricaturist and also collaborates with the ceramist Daum in Nancy

. Originally from Lorraine through his mother, he lived in Metz and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1902, where he was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Luc-Olivier Merson; at the Julian Academy of Jules Lefebvre (for engraving) and T. Robert-Fleury, at the Beaux-Arts in Nancy, he was a pupil of Jules Larcher. Gaston Hoffmann exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français from 1905, as well as at the Salon des comiques. In 1918,

G. Hoffmann collaborated with Charles Schneider, his friend met at the Beaux-Arts, whose Épinay-sur-Seine glassworks took off with the Ecole de Nancy and enjoyed great success in the years 1925. In 1922-1923 ,

G. Hoffmann works for the Manufacture de Sèvre. The same year, he produced the poster for the film Vidocq. In 1925, the artist decorated the murals of the Kerhulu restaurant in Quebec: La Faim et la Soif. These works are now kept at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec, thanks to a donation from Jean Piché in 1983.

He will be professor of drawing for the City of Paris. He taught drawing and decorative composition at the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec from 1924 to 1926. In 1946, the painter decorated the room of the Municipal Council of the Town Hall of Noyon representing the great periods of history from the city.
