"Jan Peter Verdussen (1700-1763) At The Harvest Signed Lower Right Oil On Canvas"
Jan Peter Verdussen (1700-1763) At the harvest Signed lower right Oil on canvas Old contemporary frame 60x77 cm resp. 77x93 cm Verdussen was born around 1700, probably in Antwerp, son of Pieter Verdussen and Elisabeth le Febure. His father was a combat painter. Little is known about his training and his period of activity in Antwerp. It is assumed that he was trained by his father. He left Antwerp and arrived in Turin on March 31, 1743. There he was appointed court painter to Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia. He accompanied the king on his campaigns and recorded this experience in paintings. Verdussen remained in Turin until February 28, 1746. He then moved to France. He probably went to Rome some time after leaving Turin and before settling in France. He is mentioned for the first time in Marseilles in 1744, where he became a member in 1759, then director of the academy. He then resided in Avignon, where he died on March 31, 1763. Verdussen mainly painted battle scenes, scenes of camp life and equestrian paintings, in addition to landscapes with hunting scenes and gallant societies. He was influenced by the great Dutch battle painter Philips Wouwerman. At the same time his work shows the influence of the Bamboccianti, Dutch and Flemish genre painters of simple life subjects who were active in Rome in the 17th century. A number of his paintings depict historical battles of his time. During his stay in Turin as court painter to Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia, he was responsible for depicting the victories of his patron saint. Thus, he painted a series of representations of the Battle of Guastalla. In 1745, these works adorn the gallery of the battles of the royal palace of Turin. Verdussen engraved a series of 12 panels known as Horses and Landscapes. They depict various scenes of horses in the wild engaged in activities such as hunting, fighting, cart-pulling, and agricultural work. Inv.no.2.205 4.850 €
