Object description :

"Unloading Fish Douarnenez"
Style: Breton school around 1925 Condition: Excellent Technique: Oil on panel Other: Signed lower left Height: 37 cm Width: 44.5 cm Dimensions with frame: 48/55 cm Paul Morchain Paul Morchain was born in Rochefort in 1876. Very early attracted by painting, he worked without a master, then received in Paris the advice of Eugène Chigot. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1906. He subsequently won several medals, notably in 1920, where his shipment was awarded the gold medal. He worked mainly on the coasts of the Channel (in Boulogne), the Charente (in La Rochelle) and, of course, Brittany. He painted the bay of Brest (1921), the river of Morlaix (1922), Châteaulin (1924) and Douarnenez from 1927. From that year on, he worked regularly each year in Douarnenez and Tréboul. Paul Morchain composes many canvases inspired by the morning mists of the morning. Indeed, nearly two out of three canvases of his Douarnenist work include the title “Morning in Douarnenez”. It should be noted that Paul Morchain produced paintings of military interest, where he describes naval convoys during the First World War. He was appointed painter to the Navy in 1921; a work representing a maritime convoy of the Great War is kept at the Musée de la Marine in Paris. He also does some portraits. Paul Morchain died in Rochefort-sur-Mer in 1939.
