Large bronze plaquette, the Conversion of Saint Paul, France or Flanders, 17th century
This plaquette depicts the moment when Paul of Tarsus is called by the Christ on the road to Damascus. In the foreground, represented fallen of his horse on the ground, Saint Paul holds his sword in right hand, and raises his left arm and head to the Christ that comes out in clouds where lightnings spring from. Wearing a roman legionary cuirass, he is helped by another soldier. In the background, a tumult of horses and soldiers creates an atmosphere of disarray and panic.
Excellent condition, brown patina. The reverse of the plaquette is covered with gilding.
