Bronze plaquette, the Resurrection of Christ, after Matthias Wallbaum, Germany, 17th century
This plaquette forms one part of a serie of sixteen, representing episodes of the life of Christ. They could have been produced by the workshop of Matthias Wallbaum (1554-1632), silversmith in Augsburg, after original silver models he had made.
It depicts the Resurrection of Christ, who rises in clouds holding a standard in left hand and raising his right hand to the sky. Two angels hold open the stone that was closing the grave. In the foreground, four roman soldiers roused from their sleep look like they are panicking.
Excellent condition, partially brown patina. The lower edge of the plaquette is not straight but slantwise (see pictures). Remains of tin on the upper edge of the reverse, remnant of a hanging system.
