André Cluysenaar (1871-1939)
André Cluysenaar studied painting with his father. Following his influence, he began with historical works and presented at the 1895 salon. In 1897, he presents a sculpture, San Sebastian. But, he finds that his vocation is painting. In 1902, André Cluysenaar exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts a portrait of his wife with his daughter. The success of this canvas opens the doors to many orders from the Brussels high society. Indeed, from the very beginning, he had this suppleness of the brush, this ease indispensable to the portraitist of great class and also this natural elegance, no less indispensable to the portraitist of the people of the world; but the connoisseurs immediately realized that there was something in his art that was singularly beyond this skill of hands and this superficial grace that appeals above all to the public, but is not enough to make a great portraitist». Until the beginning of the war, he remained a portraitist in demand in Brussels. By marriage, the whole family sailed easily for England in 1914. During the war, André Cluysenaar painted portraits of many English personalities including Lord Oxford and Asquith, Lord Balfour, Lloyd George... but also Émile Vandervelde . Back in Brussels, they settled in Uccle, André Cluysenaar again made portraits of political or artistic personalities, such as those of Eugène Ysaÿe and Albert Baertsoen and also devoted himself to painting for him.
He received an honorable mention at the Salon des artistes français in 1907.
