Object description :

"Théophile Décanis (1847-1917) Young Woman In A Provençal Landscape"
Bucolic life in Provence in the 19th century, the scrubland, the light and its crushing sun, all these elements brought together by one of the great specialists of the Provençal landscape of his time, Théophile Décanis. The work in very good condition is offered in a beautiful Barbizon gilt frame which measures 72 cm and 90 cm and 43 cm by 61 cm for the canvas alone. Signed lower left, it represents a young woman, leaning on a stick in a landscape in spring or summer light, certainly around the Etang de Berre where the artist used to live. A work full of light and charm. The artist is the great specialist in the landscapes of Provence. He joined the artistic current of the School of Marseille, with Jean-Baptiste Olive (1848-1936) as master and friend. In 1900, he received, along with 26 other painters, an order from Mr. administration of the Compagnie des Chemins de fer from Paris to Lyon and the Mediterranean, to decorate the Great Hall of the restaurant Le Train bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. He painted Cannes and Menton there. The city of Marseille gave its name to a street in the city. You can see his works in various museums including: Digne-les-Bains, Gassendi museum: View of Allauch. Mâcon, Musée des Ursulines: Flowering Thyme in the Plains of Arbois, Provence, Salon of French Artists of 1886, oil on canvas, 170 × 211 cm. Marseille, Museum of Fine Arts: The Old Regnac Mill, Salon of 1884, oil on canvas, 149 × 212 cm; Landscape, oil on canvas, 65 × 100 cm. Narbonne, Museum of Art and History: Summer Morning in Provence, Salon of 1903, oil on canvas.
