"Camille Merlaud (1877-1957) "laundry With Ashes" Rural Life In Périgord, Oil / Cardboard"
This oil on cardboard presents a typical scene of rural life in Périgord at the beginning of the 20th century. We see a laundress supplying boiling water to her large pottery laundry tub in which were mixed, in superimposed layers, the laundry and the ashes; the water was evacuated through a hole in the lower part and heated in a cauldron placed in the hearth of the fireplace Original scene captured on the spot by the painter Camille Merlaud (1877-1956) from Verteillac in the Dordogne. He was a recognized self-taught painter, with an impressionist sensibility, who had a predilection for landscapes and scenes of rural life in Périgord. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and participated in exhibitions in Holland and England.
