The set is complete.
This frieze was intended to be viewed in an "Autodiorama", a small wooden theater offered by the Grand Magasins du Louvre for the New Year's Eve of 1900. It allowed children to see amusing scenes drawn by renowned comedians. It was sold with only one roll to choose from among the following four: The road by Benjamin Rabier, Our troops the first days at the barracks by Poulbot, The fantastic journey of the balloon The Louvre by M. Radiguet and Walk in Paris by Abel Truchet. The others could be acquired separately. The theater as well as the rolls are extremely rare.
“Francisque Poulbot was incorporated, on November 14, 1900, into the 51st Infantry Regiment in Beauvais, in order to perform his military service. He will essentially retain memories of the army that he will often draw with irony and humor. This roll is an example. The last scene could be inspired by the Marissel district in Beauvais”.
