Stunning and large bas-relief marble carved tondo with portrait of roman Emperor Calligula (12 , AC Antium to 41 AC, Roma), as young et crowned with bay leaves.
This carved item show well at first the usual taste for antique in Renaisance period (even it was same on Louis XIV or during french Empire period too per example... mainly for political reasons), this kind of panel, full of classicism style, was perfect for Curiosities Cabinets on the past... but still today !
We note here the youngness ot this emperor, but too the severe and hieratic expression of his face, which is not really perfectly resembling with others known representations -please check last photo). The portrait is mainly identified by the circled written around the face, on the right side "IMP CALIGOLA"/
Perfect condition,
Irregularities around the medallion because the outline was left raw by the sculptor,
Very nice marble patina, opaque white to cream, with many small shiny reflections. This tondo was certainly originally framed in a round shape
Sizes
16cm diameter and 5cm depth.
