"A Young Neapolitan Fisherman - After F. Rude - Terracotta Bust"
Bust of a young Neapolitan fisherman from the original work of the great French romantic sculptor Francois Rude (1784-1855) representing a young boy playing with a turtle hampered by a strand of rush. The work presented at the Salon of 1831 upsets tradition through the choice of subject and the non-idealized representation of nature. For the first time, an artist sculpts a picturesque figure, an anecdotal subject, in a material as noble as marble. It is a total break with the classical ideology which considers genre scenes unworthy of statuary art. This sculpture inspired many artists, including Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.Old edition terracotta bust on a wooden pedestal.
