This snuffbox takes the form of a naturalistic excrement with, below, a compartment to store the tobacco. The latter closing with a hinged lid decorated with a radiating pattern.
The set is made of papier-mâché painted in trompe l'oeil.
The association between tobacco and scatology has existed for a long time, notably with the famous boxwood snuffboxes known as "father the colic". These papier-mâché snuffboxes, although more modest in their production, are now much rarer due to the more fragile materials used for their production.
Rare, very original piece of folk art from the end of the 19th century. She's a real eye-catcher and sure to be the subject of fun conversation and remarks!
