Louis Apol (1850-1936, Netherlands School)
* Louis Franciscus Hendrik Apol *
Frame dimensions: 37.3 x 28.8cm
Panel dimensions: 24.7 x 16.5 cm
An oil of modest size but of great interest:
A wrapped up female character, a young woman I think, comes towards us, on her arm she carries a basket, she is accompanied by her dog who walks in front of her. In a magical light she evolves on a winding country road illuminated by puddles of water which reflect the soft light of a setting sun. after the storm.
We can imagine; she must be soaked with a torrential rain which has just fallen on her, she is her dog in the middle of this countryside, she hastens to return to her home to warm up and find comfort Due to its character, this painting differs from many other works by Louis Apol, it does not only invite us to contemplation but involves us, really invites us to take part in the scene and in the feelings of the protagonists of the scene; speaks to us.
The work in very good condition is an oil on oak panel; the frame of good quality is posterior.
Biography :
Lodewijk Frederik Hendrik (Louis) Apol (6 September 1850 in The Hague - 22 November 1936 in The Hague) was a Dutch painter and one of the most prominent representatives of the Hague School.
Winter, oil on canvas
Apol's talent was discovered early in his life and his father ordered private lessons for him. His teachers were J.F. Hoppenbrouwers and P.F. Stortenbeker. He received a scholarship from the Dutch King Willem III in 1868. Apol specialized in winter landscapes; people are seldom depicted in his paintings. He mostly painted snowy forest landscapes with subtle man-made artefacts, such as a bridge or fence.
Dutch painter Louis Apol had an exceptionally natural talent and gained success at a young age. Encouraged by his father, he began taking private lessons as a child and later studied under Johnannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers (1819-1866) and P. Stortenbecker at The Hague Academy.
Apol specialized in winter landscapes, making his mark by composing works without figures. These stark, desolate paintings brought him much success, winning gold medals and gaining recognition from Queen Wilhelmina and her mother Emma, who purchased his work. As a result of these important purchase.
His most famous piece, A January Day (which he painted at the age of 25), is currently in a collection at the Amsterdam Municipal Museum.
In 1880 Apol took part in an expedition on the SS Willem Barents to Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean. The impressions of this journey were a source of inspiration during his whole life.
His work is widely spread and found in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag have work of Louis Apol in their collection. A street is named after him in the neighborhood of streets named after 19th and 20th century Dutch painters in Overtoomse Veld-Noord, Amsterdam.
