Born July 3, 1903 in Ukraine, Vasyl Khmeluk is a poet and expressionist painter. He died on November 2, 1986 in Paris. During the years of the liberation struggle he was in the ranks of the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic. He studied at the Academy of Sciences in Krakow from 1921 to 1923, at Charles University from 1926 to 1927, and in 1928 at the State University of Moscow State University (workshop of Serge Mako ), before joining Paris the same year where he settled there. His work was noticed by prominent collectors, such as Ambroise Vollard and Ivan Chtchoukine. In 1932, he made a personal exhibition at the "Jeune Europe" gallery in Paris, at the same time he participated in the exhibition of Ukrainian and French artists, organized by the ANUM. In 1932-1939, he participated in 12 exhibitions (including 8 personal) in the galleries of Marseilles, London and Warsaw. From 1943, the painter worked with the Durand-Ruel gallery, which organized exhibitions for him in Paris and New York. A major retrospective exhibition at the Durand-Ruel gallery (1972) became an artistic event in Paris.
