"Large Screen Composed Of Four Mahogany Sheets Lined With A Green Fabric"
Large screen composed of four mahogany sheets lined with a green fabric. Molded stiles and rails form a frame for each sheet, plus a rail that bisects each of the panels. Attributed to Canabas Louis XVI period Usual restorations, modern upholstery H. 198 x W. 68.5 cm (one sheet) H. 198 x W. 274 (whole) Witness to a time when one aspires to isolate oneself from the look, the screen spread in the 18th century. Ours, beautiful in its simplicity, is attributed to Canabas. We find a screen bearing his stamp and approaching ours, on the occasion of the sale of April 17, 2012, at Christie's. The taste of Canabas is expressed there, by the use of mahogany wood, of which he is one of the best craftsmen. Canabas was received as a master in 1766, but probably arrived in Paris in the 1730s. He worked for a long time for Jean-François Oeben and Pierre Migeon as a privileged worker, before working on his own account. King of “small mahogany furniture”, he leaves us a large production of flying furniture, which often responds, by the exclusive use of mahogany, to the Anglomania of the court elites.
