"Jeanne Gouy - The Model"
Jeanne GOUY (Active between 1890 and 1904) Pastel Signed lower right "Jeanne Gouy" 66 x 82 cm (83 x 100 cm with the frame) Jeanne Gouy was a pupil of the academic painter Jules Machard. The latter was known for his qualities as a portraitist. He also painted naked women several times, whose beauty he visibly admired, in particular a large Angelic nude attached to the rock exhibited at the 1869 Salon. an admiration for the female body. There is indeed no vulgarity in this nude: the forms are beautiful but shown without ostentation, with lightness and innocence. Jeanne Gouy exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1891 to 1900 pastels representing women in their interior (La femme aux irises, Petite fille au livre, La Lettre...) and in 1891 she exhibited a painting entitled "Study in pastel ". Here is represented a bare-breasted woman posing, leaning on a mirror and wearing a pretty blue drape. This is undoubtedly a beautiful study from a model.
