Ancient Kingdom of Siam (current Thailand)
U-Thong B style
14th - 15th century
Small Buddha head with dark patina. The face with majestic severity, the result of a stylistic syncretism mixing in a subtle dosage influences from Sukhotai, Dvaravati, Khmers and Lopburi. Thus, the face, by its proportions, is inscribed in a square and presents subtle eyebrow arches in slight relief meeting above a nose in the shape of an eagle's beak. Wide tapered almond-shaped eyes with drawn pupils and half-closed eyelids, a mouth with thick lips sketching a slight smile, referring to images of Khmer influences in the statuary of Lopburi. The head is covered with small pimples, a wide band delimiting the hair, the usnisa (cranial protuberance), here surmounted by a high flamed rasmi (borrowed from Sinhalese images) taking up the aesthetics of Sukhotai, the ears with distended lobes symbolizing the royal origin of the Buddha.
