"[holy Shroud Of Saint Catherine]. 1585. Antonius Wierix."
Antonius WIERIX Antwerp 1555-1604 [Holy shroud of Saint Catherine]. 1585. Etching. H273(317)xW200(227)mm. Good condition, slight creases from handling, small scattered stains without affecting the subject, traces of old assembly. Proof on watermarked laid paper (Briquet 12337), after Martin de Vos (1532-1603) and published by Vrints in 1585. This work presents Saint Catherine in the center on her knees exposing her shroud, surrounded by two angels. The one on the left, hold the cross and the crown of thorns, the one on the right, stands at a pole surrounded by a whip with a hammer and a bundle of wood, we understand that these are the means of torture used against men at the time. Especially the dead Christ on the cross.
