Phryne
Phryné With her real name "Mnésareté" , ("she who remembers virtue") , she was born in Thespies in Boeotia , from a father who was called Epicles .
Phryne , famous and rich hetaera , Athenian , renowned for her beauty , settles in Athens after the destruction of her city by the Thebans in 371 J-C . Soon , she has for lovers some of the most distinguished men of the moment .
Famous for her beauty , she would have served as a model for Praxiteles , her lover , for the "Aphrodite of Cnide" .
Accused of impiety , Hyperides , her lawyer , running out of argument when she was about to be condemned , by the judges of the Areopagus , removes the peplos which drapes Phryne and shows all the splendours of her beauty , thus winning the favor of the jury : the woman is acquitted and carried in triumph to the temple of Aphrodite .
In the second half of the 19th century , Phryne fed the imagination of French artists ; like Sappho and Aspasia , she perpetuates the classic tradition of illustrious and controversial women : she will be the subject of many paintings and sculptures .
Among the best known , "Phryne before the Areopagus" (1861) by Jean-Léon Gérôme , kept at the Hamburg Kunsthalle .
